Love your Plumber on World Plumbing Day 2024

G’day, it’s The Lone Drainer and Pronto here to tell you why World Plumbing Day, Monday March 11th 2024, is worth celebrating!

Take a quick look behind the scenes at our Coogee plumbing HeadQuarters to see how we celebrate every day.

It can be a lot of fun showing up for our clients daily.

We prepare ourselves and our equipment and load up materials before coming out to see you at your home or business.

But, you won’t see us giving Plunger a rubdown, sweeping the floors, making everything spic and span.

Checking on all our high-pressure drain cleaning equipment to see it’s in tip-top condition to easily fix your blocked drains.

We’ve got drain cleaning equipment for every situation.

You won’t see us reviewing footage from the inside of your sewerage pipes to find out precisely what’s going on, or working on some entertaining and educational blog posts just like this, our specialty.

We bring a variety of parts to fix your taps and toilets, and what we don’t have, we’ll get pretty quickly. You won’t see us stacking mountains of toilet paper, just in case you need it.

We bring loads of equipment to the job, just for you, and when we show up at your place, you won’t know we’ve come from our plumbing HQ here in Melody Street, Coogee.

P.S. Take another minute and watch a few scenes from The Cutting Room

But seriously, plumbing is an often forgotten, but critical component of our modern society that many people take for granted. Plumbing allows us to access clean water, safely dispose of waste water, and maintain hygiene and sanitation in our homes, workplaces, and public spaces. Without plumbing, our daily lives would be much more difficult and unhygienic.

Secondly, World Plumbing Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of plumbing and the role that plumbers play in maintaining public health and safety. It’s a chance to recognize the hard work and dedication of plumbers, who often work in challenging conditions to ensure that your plumbing systems are working properly.

Finally, World Plumbing Day is an occasion to promote sustainable plumbing practices and technologies that can help conserve water, reduce energy usage, and minimize environmental impact. As plumbers, we have a responsibility to ensure that our work is not only effective but also sustainable and environmentally friendly.

So, let’s raise a toast on World Plumbing Day and all the great plumbers out there who keep your plumbing systems running smoothly and our communities healthy and safe!

And, as we say in Australia, “‘ave a good one”!

Roll your toilet paper from the bottom

In every plumbing situation there are options, and how you roll your toilet paper is no exception.

In a previous post, Roll Your Own Toilet Paper we presented the case for having your toilet paper rolling from the top however, Is upside down the right way up?

As we observe during our bathroom travels some people choose to roll their toilet paper from the bottom due to their personal preferences or habits. Here are a few reasons why some individuals may prefer that orientation:

  1. Aesthetics: Some individuals find that rolling the toilet paper from the bottom creates a tidier appearance. They believe that the loose end of the roll is less visible and tucked away when hanging behind the roll, which they perceive as visually appealing.
  2. Habit or Tradition: Rolling the toilet paper from the bottom may be a habit or preference that people have grown accustomed to over time. It could be influenced by the way they were taught or observed others using it in their households or public restrooms.
  3. Pets or Children: In households with curious pets or small children, rolling the toilet paper from the bottom may be done intentionally. The idea is that it makes it more difficult for pets or children to easily unravel the entire roll by swatting at it or pulling on the loose end.
  4. Space Constraints: In some bathrooms, the toilet paper holder may be located close to a wall or other fixtures, leaving limited space for the roll. Rolling the toilet paper from the bottom can help prevent the roll from extending too far and potentially hitting the wall or obstructing nearby items.
  5. Personal Convenience: While rolling from the top is often considered more convenient, some individuals may find it easier to tear off the desired amount of toilet paper when it rolls from the bottom. This preference could be due to the direction in which they naturally pull or the way they position their hand for tearing.

It’s important to note that these reasons are subjective and may not apply to everyone. Ultimately, the choice of how to roll the toilet paper comes down to personal preference and individual habits.

Roll your toilet paper from the top

All of us use the bathroom. And occasionally we want to know what’s going on in other peoples bathrooms.

Bathrooms and toilets are our workplace, and the observations made from bathrooms often go unrecorded. But today, I reckon its time to share some of those observations.

A common theme is how home owners dispense their toilet rolls on the toilet roll holder. (Click here to read about the Australian patent on toilet roll holders.) Some pull their toilet paper from the back of the roll. While others pull from the top. So we carried out a little survey

Here are the top five reasons why people prefer toilet paper to roll from the top:

  1. Ease of Use: When the toilet paper is positioned with the loose end hanging over the top, it is easier to locate and grab the end of the roll. This makes it more convenient and efficient to tear off the desired amount of toilet paper without any hassle.
  2. Reduced Risk of Touching the Wall: Rolling the toilet paper from the top helps to minimize the chances of accidentally touching the wall behind it. This is especially important in public restrooms where hygiene is crucial, as touching the wall can transfer germs and bacteria.
  3. Neat Appearance: Rolling the toilet paper from the top provides a neater and more visually appealing look. The loose end of the roll is neatly presented, making it easier to grab and tear off without causing the roll to unravel or become messy.
  4. Prevents Unwanted Unraveling: Placing the loose end at the top prevents the roll from unintentionally unraveling. If the end hangs down the back of the roll, it can sometimes get caught on nearby objects or surfaces, causing the paper to unwind and waste.
  5. Intuitive Orientation: Rolling the toilet paper from the top is considered more intuitive for most people. When reaching for toilet paper, it is more natural to pull it down from the top rather than from behind the roll. This orientation aligns with our instinctive hand movements and provides a smoother user experience.

While your personal preferences may vary, these reasons highlight the practical and aesthetic advantages of rolling toilet paper from the top.

Women Only. The Turkish Bath Sydney

I, Dave Conroy, The Lone Drainer and Pronto, plumber to the stars of the Eastern suburbs pride myself on running a modern, forward looking business, being proud to be a multicultural Australian and always on the lookout for new ideas, both for plumbing and life.

This week however, by virtue of a visit to the Ottoman Turkish Bath and Day Spa in South Granville, I was privileged to learn something both modern and traditional all at the same time.

And no, it wasn’t the vision of a giant hexagonal white marble bathhouse, with a massive hot spa, surrounded by twenty big white marble wash basins and a huge marble central slab, everything looking like a Renaissance painting, all steam and sexy oriental music. Oh no, it wasn’t even the big marble pedestals where the clients are scrubbed and massaged by dutiful and strong and OK, I’m not shy to say it, attractive female attendants, slathering them in rosewater scented lotions and potions; no, no, no, I didn’t get to see all that, as it’s a women’s only establishment. That was just reported to me by my female colleague who experienced it all.  Afterwards she was dopily, dreamily barely able to draw my attention to the DRAINAGE system which was what she thought would interest me.

She was right.  Drains are a big deal for plumbers and we get excited when someone does something clever. At the Ottoman Spa, they had managed to combine the most traditional hammam (that’s the Turkish word for bathhouse) architecture with the most modern of drainage systems.

The first hammam was built in 1453 when Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror conquered Istanbul. And its still standing! You can go there if you click here.

But despite all that classic marble design, the drainage and tiling were super modern and a credit to the tradesmen responsible.  It’s not easy to get such vast quantities of water (all that sluicing over all those marble benches) to fall so well and so discreetly over such a vast area.

We’ve come a long way since 1453.  And since the invention of the first hollow-pipe drainage by Sir Hugh Dalrymple who died some three hundred years later and yet still gets credited with inventing drainage.  Sorry Sultan Mehmet!

That innovation, the new ideas building on the foundation of great old ideas is what I love about plumbing.   I got to learn all about hammams today.  It’s a great gig.

The Lone Drainer and Pronto. The Gondolier and the Oar maker

I woke this morning May 29th 2023 to read the Sydney Morning Herald story from Venice about the Grand Canal turning a distinctive green. A colour familiar to me.

It looks like the fluorosceine dye we emergency plumbers use to identify the source of water and sewage leaks. It’s often been used by school kids young and old for end of year pranks to turn a fountain green. I believe it is harmless to small aquatic organisms.

I immediately sent a text message to Gio my Venetian gondolier mate to say G’day. It’s a few years ago now that we had Gio guide us around his home town of Venice. Aaah. Travel and plumbing! Spend six minutes with Gio as he shows me around the workshop of Paolo Brandolisio his oarmaker.

On June 1st 2023 a similiar green dye appeared in Melbourne’s Yarra river.

Full Moon Blocked Drains

Regardless of the season, tree roots block drains.
And there is a school of thought they occur more during the full moon :-).

However, there is no scientific evidence to suggest that tree roots are more likely to cause blocked drains during the full moon.
The idea that the full moon affects tree roots and causes them to grow more or become more active is a myth that has been around for a long time.
Blocked drains can be caused by a variety of factors, including tree roots about 85% of the time.

Tree roots grow in response to a variety of factors, such as moisture, nutrients, and changes in temperature, but the phase of the moon has no effect on this process.
Tree leaves and other debris, especially from our deciduous trees can accumulate in pipes, as well as grease, oil, and other substances like paint and even cement sometimes gets poured down the drain.

Regular maintenance and cleaning can help prevent blocked drains and keep your pipes flowing smoothly.

The full moon on the east coast of Australia is at about 14.30 today April 6th, 2023.

Eight reasons to drink more water.

Here in Coogee, Sydney Australia we are lucky to have a good quality water supply from our taps. As I write this it’s 12.30 pm on Monday March 6th 2023 and its 35 Deg. celsius outside expecting 37 Deg. Its damned hot and humid. We all know that we should Drink more water, and today is a perfect reason to do it.

Now here are eight more reasons to do it

  1. Hydration: Drinking enough water on any day, let alone today, is essential for staying hydrated, which helps maintain the balance of bodily fluids, regulate body temperature, and support every bodily functions.
  2. Improved physical performance: Staying hydrated can help improve physical performance by reducing fatigue and increasing our flagging energy levels.
  3. Weight management: Drinking water can help with weight management by promoting the feeling of fullness. It will help reducing calorie intake, and boosting my metabolism.
  4. Healthy skin: Drinking water helps keep my skin hydrated, which can improve the skins’ overall health and appearance.
  5. Kidney function: Drinking enough water is important for supporting healthy kidney function by helping to flush out waste and toxins from the body.
  6. Digestion: Drinking water can help support healthy digestion by softening the bowels and preventing constipation.
  7. Reduced risk of certain diseases: Staying hydrated by drinking enough water has been associated with a reduced risk of several diseases, including kidney stones, bladder cancer, and coronary heart disease.
  8. Improved cognitive function: Drinking enough water is important for optimal brain function, as dehydration can impair cognitive performance and cause headaches and fatigue.

Super Bowl 2023 Flush with Excitement.

The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 in Super Bowl 57 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale Arizona on Monday morning Sydney time. It was the team’s second title in four seasons. Now Aussies Jordan Mailata an AFL player and punter Arryn Siposs a Rugy league man, made Australian sporting history when they played for Philadelphia. 🙁

Personally, apart from my son going to a game at the stadium when he was studying at NAU Northern Arizona University in 2019, I know little about the contest other than to say the Chiefs star Quarterback Patrick Mahomes apparently won the game after his team was behind 24-14 at half time.

Super

And its the half time break that gets my interest! Specifically, toilet flushing at half time.

In a post from Super Bowl 2016, I wrote that the amount of water used in toilet flushing during the Super Bowl half time break is the same volume that would flow over Niagara Falls in seven minutes.

In doing some research on the topic, anecdotally, it is often joked that there is a Super Bowl flush that occurs during the halftime break, as many viewers may use the bathroom at the same time. However, there is no reliable data to support the claim.

In fact, some experts have suggested that the idea of a simultaneous flush causing water system issues is a myth, as modern water systems are designed to handle large surges in demand. While it is possible that water demand may increase during the halftime break or the Super Bowl flush, the impact on water infrastructure is likely to be minimal.

Our local Sydney news reporting on the Super Bowl reckon there are now more Australians watching that game than the Melbourne Cup.

Given Super Bowl lasts three and a half hours and, The Melbourne Cup lasts three and a half minutes, the halftime Super Bowl flush might be a thing.

What do you reckon?

Should the Toilet seat be left Up or Down?

Our summer break allows time to ask some of the greater life questions.

And the Question of Toilet seat, Up or Down? is a big one.

Over salad sandwiches, I asked the Question, Why do Women want the toilet seat left down?

The reply was simple!

Leaving the toilet seat down is considered courteous and hygienic for women because it helps to prevent the toilet from splashing onto the seat or floor when it is used.

Additionally, it makes it easier for them to use the toilet without having to adjust the seat themselves.

Then I asked my audience, Can you give 3 reasons why men want the seat left up?

  1. To prevent falls: Men may prefer to leave the seat up to prevent accidental falls or slips when using the toilet in the middle of the night or in low-light conditions.

  2. Hygiene: Some men may prefer to leave the seat up to prevent the buildup of bacteria or germs on the seat.

  3. Ease of use: Men may prefer to leave the seat up because it makes it easier for them to use the toilet without having to adjust the seat themselves.

A few days later, I posed the same question, and got this reply.

For the ladies

  1. Leaving the toilet seat down can help prevent accidents and injuries by reducing the chance of falling or sitting on a wet seat.

  2. It can also help to keep the bathroom cleaner by reducing the likelihood of toilet water splashing onto the floor or seat.

  3. Lastly, it is often considered more hygienic for women as it makes it easier for them to use the toilet without having to adjust the seat themselves, avoiding any potential contact with germs.

Then the men

  1. Men may prefer to leave the toilet seat up because it is the default position, and they are used to it.
  2. A raised seat allows men to aim more effectively, reducing the likelihood of urine splash-back or misses.

  3. Leaving the seat up can also serve as a visual indicator that the toilet has been used, so that the next person to use it knows to lower the seat before using it.

It’s important to note that these preferences are not universal and may vary from person to person. Ultimately, it’s a matter of personal preference.

What do you think?

Don’t do this in the bathroom!

During our Coronavirus work schedule, I’ve found some fun hints and tips about plumbing and health that are worth sharing.

How germs spread:

  • on your toothbrush,
  • your toilet seat,
  • and the toilet flush button, are just a few examples.

Inventor rolls out 100 years

Milestones come and go; however, it shouldn’t pass without notice that January 23rd 2019 is the centenary of application No.9902/19 with the Commonwealth of Australia’s patent office of the “serving apparatus for toilet paper” also known as the toilet paper roll holder.

The invention dispenses a product most of us use daily.

Whether your favourite toilet roll is textured or patterned, two or four-ply, premium or pulped, waxed or lotioned, the standard sized roll or the jumbo or jumbo junior, whether you roll over or under, please take a moment to contemplate the genius of Clarence Edward Anable of Sacramento, California.

Mr Anable’s revolutionary invention has, without doubt, improved the sanitary status of the world.

The Joy of Toilets in Coogee

Exactly 12 months ago today the Mayor of Randwick Noel D’Souza, broke ground on the new Coogee Beach toilet block. I am happy to report that these new facilities were un-officially opened 360 days later on Friday September 1st 2017. The first day of spring.

And it was worth the wait!

The discomfort to beach regulars and the interruption of the foot traffic flow along the upper and lower promenade right in the middle of Coogee beach is a distant memory.

I’ve been watching the evolution of the site and my almost daily hop, skip and jump along the lower prom and the detour around the street level construction zone sensed that this simple toilet block would be another jewel in the Coogee crown. I was right!

The spring weather on Fathers Day saw people out in droves. They were happy to use the new facilities. I had to try ’em for myself. The plumbing is state of the art.

The hand wash facilities at the front of the change room with electronic sensor taps that spit water into the free form basins when they detect your hands in range, compliment the soap dispensers. The showers in this open public area are all push button. I tried one and had my shirt sleeve soaked by the instant arrival of fresh H2O from the water saving shower head.

Mums and Dads will be able to rinse off and have their kids do the same without having to go into the change rooms and toilets dedicated to both sexes.

I didn’t venture into the ladies but the men’s change room is great.
Features include 5 low maintenance stainless steel WCs with concealed water saving cisterns and an easy to maintain urinal about 5 metres long, 5 additional showers and plenty of clothes hooks and seating to get changed before and after swimming. The entire area can be easily washed down and the beautiful polished concrete floor and the brightly tiled walls will help keep the facility sparkling.

During my roaming through the freshly laid turf in the park above, I had wondered about the new concrete seating and the glass panels set into the ground there.

I’m pleased to say they are skylights for the change rooms below. Brilliant!

Well done Randwick City Council.

Our readers are still the best source of fun, information, insights and images from the wonderful world of plumbing

I’ve heard plenty of explanations of the word Poo. I hadn’t heard this one.

Shower outdoors more often

With our hottest summer on record, many of us have been showering outdoors. It’s a perfect opportunity to water the garden and the lawn, stay cool ourselves and save water.

Some clients have us set up a permanent outdoor shower in the garden or near the swimming pool just to rinse off.

I reckon simple is best. Good old corrugated and canvas.

Our correspondent enjoying the Three Capes Track in beautiful Tasmania, also reports it was 13°C.

World Toilet Day 2016

Today November 19th, 2016 is  World Toilet Day .

What does working as a plumber in Sydney, one of the greatest cities in the world, mean to me on World Toilet Day?

This is a city of contrast and we get to see mostly the top end where it’s nothing for people to spend over $1000 to buy a new toilet.

Many of the houses we visit have 2 or more toilets and many of us take it for granted that we can use a toilet, then flush the loo with clean drinking water from our seemingly endless water supply.

A lot of Sydneysiders would be surprised to know that about 1/3 of the world’s population have neither a toilet to use or clean running water to drink. Let alone flushing away their bodily waste off to a treatment works, somewhere out of sight. And out of mind!

Today, when you use your toilet, think for a moment how we might help those less fortunate.

During your Christmas holiday, if you visit an underprivileged country and experience poor toilet hygiene, think of those people and how we may be able to help them before World Toilet Day 2017. If you’ve got the stomach for it, take a picture of your travel experience and send it to me.

I’d like to raise awareness of this simple missing basic need for so many.

Toilet Hygiene #2

A recent study showed  95% of men and women say they wash their hands after using the toilet, especially a public toilet.

Funnily enough, only 67% of people actually do wash their hands after using a public loo or the toilets in their workplace. There have been quite a few surveys done on this topic and some innovative ideas to check on whether we did or didn’t wash.

It’s quite well documented that the toilet flush button is one of the most un-hygienic places in the bathroom and I’m hoping that all our readers apply the simple rule.

Flush when you’re finished! But, think about it, What did you do before you flushed the loo?

So, wash your hands after a trip to the bathroom.

Wash your hands

Wash your hands

Toilet Hygiene #1

Q. What’s the 3rd most un-hygienic place in the bathroom?

A. The toilet flush button.

Who’d have thought? Now, wash your hands!

A plumbers view – Super Bowl 2016

Sunday, February 7th was Super Bowl 50 Sunday in San Francisco. By now you may know The Denver Broncos beat the Carolina Panthers 24-10 at Levi’s Stadium.

What’s that got to do with plumbing? I hear you ask. Well plenty; according to the Scott Tissue company, the toilet is flushed more during halftime than at any other point during the year. That’s 90 million flushes, using 350 million gallons or 1,323,000,000 litres of water, which is the same amount of water that flows over Niagara Falls in seven minutes.

Now, that is…..a Super Bowl!

I’d like to know how many blocked drains happened on Super Bowl Sunday!

Why this plumber makes a regular blood donation

New Blood 2
Its a simple thing to give blood. It doesn’t hurt at all! In fact it makes you feel really good…. and you get to help someone else.

Who knows, I may get to help you or your loved ones.

So what does that have to do with plumbing……

Well, only that all of your pipes need flushing from time to time. Even your personal pipes!

This is Furk! Having FUn at woRK.

Why men spend so much time in the Loo!

Why men spend so much time in the loo is still a mystery to me!

My Dad could disappear in there for what seemed like hours; he would emerge with the Herald under his arm and an understanding of what had been happening in the world.

He took time to think! Meditation perhaps?

My eldest son is just the same. He has Dad’s brains.

Personally, I get in, do what I have too and get the hell out of there.

8 Reasons to drink water!

water yogi

It’s easy to take water for granted.

I spend most of my life working with water, delivering it to your taps and toilets and working on blocked drains that won’t allow your waste water to run away.

My entire family’s leisure time is spent scuba diving and snorkeling, surfing and sailing, swimming and socialising on and in the water. And when we’ve finished having fun in the water, we all shower off! Water is a major part of our life.

But drinking water is something I must make part of my life as middle age sneaks up on me. I know to be with the ones I love and do the things I love,  I must have good health. And, I usually say if I can do it, then it’s pretty easy to do!

So here’s my top 8 good reasons why we should drink more water:

Lose weight: Drinking water helps you lose weight because it flushes out the by-products of fat breakdown.  Drinking water reduces hunger, it’s an effective appetite suppressant so you’ll eat less.  Plus, water has zero calories.

A Natural Remedy for Headache: Helps relieve headache and back pain usually caused by dehydration.  Although many reasons contribute to headache, dehydration is the common one. This is a big one for me.

Better Productivity at Work: Your brain is mostly made up of water, so drinking water helps you think better and be more alert, cause we need more alerts!

Better Exercise: Drinking water regulates your body temperature, so you should feel more energetic when doing exercises. Water helps fuel your muscles; and I need that.

Helps with Digestion and Constipation: Drinking water raises your metabolism because it helps with digestion.  Fibre and water should  go hand in hand so that you can have your daily bowel movement. Water is good for the personal plumbing as well as the house plumbing.

Reduce Sickness: Drinking plenty of water helps fight against flu and things like kidney stones and heart attack.  I fill the water jug and roughly cut 2 or 3 lemons, add them in and leave it to sit for a while. It apparently helps intestinal problems. Plus it can improve your immune system.

Improve your Mood: Your body feels very good and that’s why you feel happy. Helps with Furking   (Having fun…….. while you’re working).

Reduce the Risk of Cancer: Some studies of the digestive system show that drinking a healthy amount of water may reduce the risks of bladder cancer and colon cancer. Water dilutes the concentration of cancer-causing agents in the urine and shortens the time in which they are in contact with your bladder lining. Now, that sounds good to me!

Broncos and Cowboys Long Weekend

The October long weekend brings a sporting feast to Sydney. NRL fans will descend on our city for the Grand Final between the Brisbane Broncos and the North Queensland Cowboys.

The Lone Drainer and Pronto loves cowboys and horses. My heart says Cowboys but the head says Broncos.

The Epsom Handicap will be run at Royal Randwick. I’m tipping Sadlers Lake with the great Jim Cassidy riding. Whilst in Melbourne, the AFL sees the Hawks Hawthorn up against the Eagles from West Coast. Go Eagles!

What ever you’re doing, have fun! And if you have a plumbing emergencyyou can call us!
